New Year - New Blog

It is now 2012 and Jade is in her Kindergarten 2. Past few weeks many things have been going around in my mind as a father, a husband and as a person. Perhaps it all leads back to how I develop myself as a parent.

After more than five years in my daughter's life, I realize that it is really not easy to be a good parent. Being a parent, I need to shoulder responsibility. Responsibility to first lead by example to my child. I realize that whatever positive or negative actions that I display can be directly felt by my daughter and if I am not careful, I may create a permanent impact on her life.

Being a parent also means that I have to learn to understand how to cope with human relations better. I realize that how I deal with my family and friends have a great impact on Jade, even if she may not realize. Her social life will one day reflect mine. How I choose my friends is very important and how I treat my family is very important too. Yeah, there are times when I may not be a good father or a good husband or a good son, but I am seeking to improve and I know that one day, I will be giving them my best!

Being a good parent also means that I have to manage my emotions well. I realize that when I do not manage it well, somehow Jade can feel it and even when I am not talking about it, she will sometimes come and ask me, "Are you sad, Daddy?" Many times I will reply to her "No" but I can sense she knows the truth. This makes me want to be more positive as a person myself in order not to affect her growth as I want her to be a happy and fulfilled child.

I believe that all things happen for a good reason. There is a reason why I started Jade's blog and continued till now. There is a reason why I want to be a good father. There is a reason why till date there are still things that I do not understand and am seeking to learn them. There is a reason why you are reading this post. There is a reason why we have to go through ups and downs. There is a reason why I am Jade's daddy. All things happen for a good reason, and it is with this believe that I will be stronger and more ready for Jade in 2012.

Jade Updates - August 2011

Wow time really flies. It's been more than a month since I updated Jade's blog. Well... Same excuse everytime... Busy, busy, busy...

Anyway, this past month Jade did a couple of things....

First, she had a haircut. Now her hair is Mushroom style...

We also went to National Day Parade and enjoyed ourselves there. I have not felt that patriotic for a long long time. Ha ha...

Also, my wife's family had a family MRT excursion. We had to take MRT to our dinner place due to the road closure for NDP rehearsal. If I recall correctly, this seems to be the first time.

Lastly, Jade had the opportunity to meet Mister Maker LIVE and to participate in an art & craft event in The Forum. Jade enjoyed herself there and this event is made possible by her wonderful mommy... (cos she applied for the seat).

Sending & Fetching Jade To/From School

It has been more than a month since I have officially resigned from StarHub, where I have worked for more than 13 years. These one month plus I have been totally enjoying myself doing one thing - sending & fetching my daughter to school, whenever I can.

Yes, I really enjoy bringing her to school and spending the journey with her. Maybe to some people it is a chore, but to me it is definitely a blessing. Recently, I also posted this on Facebook:

"Asked Jade if she would like me to bring her to school by bus, taxi or walk. She chose to walk. When asked why she said so that she can spend more time chatting with me. I am so grateful for having her."

Yes, when she gave me this reply, you cannot imagine how warm my heart felt. I am really so grateful that the universe has sent her to me & my wife. She is really a very sensible girl and I am really really proud of her. Ha ha...

Anyway, just the other day after fetching her and returning home, when she saw my other pair of shoe outside the gate, she helped to pick it up and put it inside the shoe rack without me asking. I asked myself what did I do to deserve her? I think it must be our love for her that nurtures her into a loving and caring daughter.

I have been busy with work for this one month and hence have not found time to update Jade's blog. Will find more time for this though. As I have told many of my friends, this is going to be Jade's 21st birthday present.

Jade finally had her first eye test in her school and this is her result. I honestly do not know what LogMar and Computed Smellen mean but her 3-D Vision Screening says it is Normal, and this is what I am happy about. Anyway, I guess it must be the work of g3 for her.

Jade Lee Updates

It's been a while since I last updated Jade's blog. That's because daddy went for his last in-camp-training in April. Anyway, I did something yesterday that I kind of regret. I punished Jade for throwing a shooter glass into the basin by hitting her hand hard. Later, Jade explained to me that the glass actually slipped off her hand.

Guess I was too eager to judge. I apologized to Jade for not hearing her out and asked her to hit my hand back. Jade was very sensible and refused to hit me because she said she does not want to hurt me. This made me even more guilty. Anyway, I took it as a lesson learned.

A Lesson I Learned From Jade

We bought a packet of Ribena drink for Jade and Jade realized that there is a layer of plastic seal around the cap. So, being a loving father, I offered my help to tear away the piece of plastic as it was tightly sealed and I assumed that Jade could not tear it open.

But I was wrong... Very wrong.

Jade refused my helped and confidently told me that she can do it. And because I wanted to see how she does it, I agreed.

Jade started off by using her tiny fingers to pull the plastic out. As it was really very tightly sealed, it seemed impossible for her to pull or tear it open. Nevertheless, she continued to do her best to peel it off slowly but alas, she could not do it.

I then offered my help again.

Instead of giving up and handing over the packet drink to me, Jade again told me that she can do it. After spending some time with no success, she changed her approach and used her teeth to attempt to bite the plastic seal instead. I almost wanted to stop her for fear of her hurting her teeth/mouth but I stopped myself. I told myself then that I have to let her do it, because somehow I believed in her.

With much effort, Jade finally tore the plastic open and she proudly held the packet of Ribena drink and showed me, saying 'See Daddy, I told you I can do it.'

At that moment, I was also very proud. Proud of her determination, proud of her never say no attitude, proud to be her father.

At the same time, I reflected on myself. While a five year old girl can have so much determination to get the result she wants, as her father, I am not doing enough. Not enough to get the results I want. Not enough to go for the achievements I can.

I believe that I can achieve better things in life for my family. Somehow, my determination is not as strong as my daughter's. Perhaps I have lost the faith that a child has. Perhaps she is here to show me that I too, CAN! Whatever the reason, this is a very important lesson that I have learned from Jade.

To end, as I am typing this post, I would like to share this quote I am seeing now on my calendar.

I think sometimes we are just not certain of what we can achieve, and we choose not to do it. But if we believe and do it without thinking too much, we can certainly achieve greater heights.

Lastly, these are some updated photos of Jade. The one with the heart in the apple was an idea she thought of and she presented it to me. All I can say is I am blessed. :)

Poor Jade Kena HIVES!!!

Poor Jade somehow started to have hives yesterday and had already visited the doctor. Take a look at the photos.

Terrible right? I can only pray that she recover as soon as possible. Meanwhile, we can only do our best to look after her. Lucky thing is mummy's time is more flexible now and can spend more time to look after Jade.

Doctor said she'll recover in 5 days to 6 weeks. I seriously hope it's the former. Anyway, if you want to know more about hives, you may read it from this website. Meanwhile, I've got to rush home to look after her.

January happenings

Last Saturday, Jade resumed her Julia Gabriel speech & drama class after the holidays. We have arranged for her to attend the one and a half hour class as she really enjoys the learning environment. Although it is slightly more expensive, we believe it is money well spent.

Her Saturday class time has been amended to start at 10am though. What surprised me was that there are many other students starting at the same time. On a Saturday morning with so many parents bringing their children to the centre for such enrichment class, this will mean that Singapore families really focus a lot on their childrens' development.

Another thing my wife found out is of her previous class of more than ten kids, there are only two students who have not changed their class duration to one and a half hours. Besides the children enjoying the classes, this also means that parents are more than willing to spend on their children on enrichment classes. This is a good thing, for the child. However, I do have some other observations about this fact which I will share my opinion here.

Anyway, I truly believe in giving what my daughter wants as long as she appreciates it and enjoys it. We have also discussed about pulling her out from her Yamaha lessons as my observation is she is not enjoying it totally. My message to her is very simple - as long as she does not enjoy, she can choose not to do but if she likes what she is doing, she will have to do her best.

On Sunday, we took Jade to attend to a one hour workshop about mid brain activation. While this is something fascinating and something that we will let Jade attend in time to come, we feel that she is still too young and not ready. Nevertheless, we are keeping it an option for us to explore. If you are keen to find out more about mid brain activation, do feel free to contact me. Jade was the flower girl for auntie Michelle & uncle Jia Da's wedding. She did an excellent job given the short notice and practice session. Well Done Jade!!! Daddy & Mommy are proud of you. Daddy and Mummy contributed too by being emcees for the dinner. It was a great experience and a breakthrough for daddy.

2010 - Coming To An End

2010 is coming to an end. This marks Jade's journey officially into preschool. Yes, she is promoting to Kindergarten One. 2010 has been a wonderful journey for Jade & the family, and I am certain 2011 is a highly energizing year for us. A Day At The Carnival

Been sometime since I updated Jade's blog. We went to Nanyang Polytechnic yesterday for a carnival outing with mom's parents and Jade truly enjoyed herself at the carnival. Jade also took part in the coloring contest and with a little bit of help from mummy, guess what she won first prize in her category.

We are so proud of her and more importantly, we are so happy that she has enjoyed herself totally. We also visited my parents in the afternoon and my friend Alex Tan's house in the evening.

A busy day yesterday was and when we asked Jade which part of the day she liked most, she replied, "the coloring". When asked her was it the coloring part or the prize winning part she said it was both.

Happy Birthday To Daddy!

Yesterday was my birthday and I had a wonderful day with Amily & Jade. Jade made me a birthday cake and even asked me to 'disappear' when she was decorating the cake. A friend commented it is a colorful cake. Another asked me how it tasted. 'Sweet of course!' I replied.

Anyway, we also made a trip to Genting over the last weekend and had fun there. Lots of fun in fact. This is the first time we played in the outdoor theme park and although there are still a lot of rides that Jade could not get to play due to the height limit, I was surprised that she enjoyed the 'Dragon ride', which is a relatively fast roller coaster. I was worried that she may end up crying after the first ride but surprising, when the ride ended, she asked for more. 'Again, again, again!' she said, as she simply could not contain her excitement. Needless to say, we let her go again.

We also let Jade try the kids bumper car. Well, at first, she did not know how to drive the car and it either turned around in circles or kept bumping on the sides. I can see frustration written on her face. When she finished, I asked her 'would you like to go again?' and the answer was No.

Anyway, I brought her to another kids bumper car station on another day and asked her to play again. Initially she said no but I encouraged her to go again and learn how to play. She agreed and went ahead. This time round, again she started off by turning around in circles and banging the car on the sides but after a while, she got the hang of it and started driving around, occasionally bumping into other cars. When her ride is over, she requested to go again. I allowed her to go more and very soon, she was enjoying her rides.

When it was all over, my wife & I took the opportunity to teach her an important lesson in life. When things did not seem to start off well at first, don't give up. Just do it over and over and over again and very soon, it will become easier and easier. We also reflect on ourselves on this very simple principle.

There are many other rides that Jade played this time round and seeing how much she enjoyed herself really warms our hearts. Apart from the theme parks, the purpose of this trip was to attend a three day convention. Again, Jade enjoyed herself totally and put on her best behaviour throughout the three days. We really appreciate her cooperation. We were also commended and had a chance to be on stage. Jade liked the moment very much.

Genting Highlands to me in the past was all about the Casino. This time round though, I was there to see an opportunity and to learn more about myself. I am glad to announce that I did not step into the Casino this time, not because I did not have the time but because I made the choice. I chose to spend more time with my family pursuing more important things in our lives.

Time Flies

Time really passes. As I was writing an email to my ex-colleague, I suddenly realize that the last time she saw my daughter was when she was still less than a year old. Now my daughter is already four. Time really passes so quickly without me realizing it. Really must cherish each and every moment with those we love.

As I looked back at Jade's blog, I can't help but keep the smile on my face. She was so cute, so adorable. Memories of her start flashing back. From the time when she was a newborn, to her first 'talk', her first wobbly walk, and her many firsts, I really was not able to wipe off the silly grin on my face. Ha ha...

Of course, many things have happened in these four years. There were ups and downs. She went through pains like HFMD, she fell down and she got up, she started asking more and more questions, and more importantly, she grew up. Yes she is only four I know but it seemed so fast and yet so short. So fast that she had grown up. So short as there seemed to be never enough time for her.

I told my wife what my wish for life is now - I wish to be able to send and fetch her to and from school every single day. Yes, this is only a dream I can have now but I know that this dream will come true one day.

A Night's Out

Yesterday I went to work overtime in my office and I left house at about 10am. Jade was still asleep at that time (she did wake up earlier but went back to sleep) and I kissed her goodbye. I finished my work at 5.30pm and originally, I planned to have dinner with my friends right after work. However, I made a trip home to pick up a book to pass to my friend, before I proceed to meet them.

When I was leaving my house again, I happened to see my wife and Jade coming out of the lift and having missed her so much, I went to hug and kiss her. Jade held on to me tightly and seeing that I am all dressed up, she asked where was I going. I replied that I am going to have dinner with my friends and she started crying. She said 'I don't want you to go daddy. I miss you. I have not seen you for the whole day'. That almost broke my heart. So I told her that daddy has promised his friends to meet for dinner, and I have to keep my promise. She refused to let me go still until I told her that I will get something for her when I return, and that I will keep my promise to her too.

I did keep my promise. I bought a small little yo-yo with a lollipop attached. She was very happy when she saw me that evening and I am happy that we share a strong bond.

I certainly hope that I can spend more time with my darling Jade and I certainly am working towards that day where I can choose to give my wife the lifestyle she deserves, and to give my daughter the time that she should have.

Bonding With Jade

Brought Jade to a coffeeshop to wait for mummy while she meets up with her friend. Meanwhile, I asked her to try to write A to Z on a drawing board. She started writing and as I saw her write, I encouraged her by saying things like 'It's nice', 'Well done', 'Looks good'. That kept her going until she finished letter Z.

I really felt good after she finished writing. Not because I am proud of her writing the alphabets but rather I truly enjoyed the time I spent with her. This is bonding, and I believe she has enjoyed it very much too. In fact, when we left, she asked if we can go back there again. It is a very simple coffeeshop so I asked her why? She said she liked that place and I told her 'Sure, we can come back'. I liked that place too... A simple coffeeshop and yet, filled with the love and bond of a father and daughter.

For me, there was one more lesson to be learned. If I can afford to have such bonding with my daughter any day, any time, it will be a dream come true. I realize that my work now forbids me to do so, and I treasure every moment I have with her. But it will be even better if I can one day, find something that I love to do, and yet have freedom of time to spend with my love ones. I know that day will come.

Daddy has been away for reservist for 2 weeks so was not able to bring Jade to her school. Today, I finally brought her to school and Jade was very excited about it especially when she reached school early. Seeing how happy she was really made my day... Daddy will always love you darling...

Jade learned and shared something with me from her class at Julia Gabriel last weekend. Her teacher, Caroline, taught the class to 'Dare To Dream'. I think that this is an important lesson for her even though it she is only in pre-school. Honestly, I did not have the privilege to learn such things when young and was taught that life itself has its limitations. In fact, I know now that life is about having your dreams and daring to dream them and to just go ahead and achieve them. I am glad that we have the opportunity to allow our daughter to go for her dreams.

HFMD Terror

Jade has been down with HFMD from 20 Dec 2009 and just fully recovered on 5 Jan 2010. Year end was pretty confined as we were not able to go out for celebrations. Still, I am glad she has fully recovered and I can also return to work. I hope that 2010 will be a better year for Jade as 2009 she has had HFMD twice.

Poor Jade has been down with cough again over the weekend. It was pretty bad on Sunday night so I had to take leave to look after her yesterday. Am glad that my efforts paid off as she seemed a little better. Just keeping my fingers crossed she is not eating any fruits in school for this week.

This morning as I brought Jade to her school I teached her how to use 'is' and 'are'. I was delighted that after some quick explanations she was able to grasp the concept.

So I tested her and asked her a couple of questions like 'They is or they are?', 'He is or he are?', 'Daddy is or daddy are?', 'Your friends is or your friends are?', 'Grandpa and Grandma is or Grandpa and 'Grandma are?' etc.

To my surprise, she answered only one wrongly. To me, this is pretty impressive coming from my very own daughter. So I praised her and rewarded her with a gummy bear.

I am going to test her again tonight to see if she still remembers it. Of course, I am not expecting that she will still remember it and will look forward to be amazed by her one more time.

This morning as I hugged, kissed and waved goodbye to Jade as she walked into her school, I had a sense of warmth in my heart. It really felt good to see my daughter grow up, especially when she's independent and can do simple stuff on her own.

Looking at her carrying her bag, putting her own shoe into the shoe rack, and proceeding to her class, I really felt I'm living a very fulfilling life as her daddy. She's really a gift to my wife & I.

My wife & I attended a personal development workshop over the weekend (starts Thur night and end Sun morning 2am) and did not spend time with our daughter. Thanks to our mothers' help to take care of little Jade, we're really glad we can be spend quality time with her again.

Two things I want to share that happened...

1) I am starting to do situp and on Monday evening while doing sit-ups on the floor near my tower fan (purposely put it near me to cool me down), Jade asked "Daddy are you hot (as in feeling hot)?" I replied "Yes". She got up and moved to the fan. I was afraid she'll switch it off or press some buttons on the fan and quickly asked her "Don't press don't press." To my surprise, this was what she said and did "I'm not going to press. I'm going to push it nearer to you."

Upon hearing this, my heart felt so warm and at the same time, guilty. Warm that my daughter really cares so much for me and guilty that I did not learn to trust her and jumped to conclusion. I tell myself there and then that I have to learn to trust my loved ones around me and not to jump to conclusion.

2) When I went to buy some drinks alone yesterday evening, I saw a neighbour (auntie) and rightaway she told me "Hi! Your daugher is very smart. The other day when I saw her with your mother, she told me her daddy and mommy were on course. I can't understand what she was saying a asked "on cough?" then she told me "on course means going to study, not cough". My neighbour continued to praise my daughter for being smart and of course, I am very proud of her at the moment. I shared with my wife what our neighbour said and this small but significant incident has definitely made us proud of Jade and strengthened our love as a family.

Just a tot... It's definitely not easy being parents. One moment you see your child enjoying herself, laughing out loud, playing hard and the next moment, you see her fall sick and worse still, have to go to hospital. Quite worrying at times and pains our heart to see our daughter suffer (would have opted to suffer on her behalf if we could). Then another moment when she's singing her favourite song, reading her favourite book or simply smiling gracefully at you and you feel like she's an angel to you and next, she makes you feel like your blood is boiling because of something wrong she did. Ha ha... It really takes a lot of energy and effort to manage our emotions and learn to discipline instead of punish. Well, at the end of the day, when we see Jade laughing happily and sharing with us her joy, we'll tell ourselves everything we go through (good and bad) is definitely worth it.

Our dear Jade made a visit to KK Hospital
late last night as she was down with fever
and vomitted 8 times throughout the day.
Luckily she's better today. Hope she'll be
healthy and happy... Love, Dad & Mom...

Daddy Victor made morning milk for Jade. Jade covered both eyes with both hands and said "Both my hands are occupied".

14th Jan 2009 - Wednesday

While rushing for school, Daddy Victor wanted to take taxi instead of bus. Both waited for quite a while for taxi and suddenly Daddy asked Jade, How to take taxi? She said "I have an idea...FLAG."
